Kansas author Nancy Pickard spoke at the Ashland Library last January. Picard’s latest novel, The Virgin of Small Plains, was chosen as the Kansas Reads novel of the year for 2008 and was on the 2007 Kansas Notable Books List. Pickard is also the author of sixteen popular and critically acclaimed novels, including the Jenny Cain and Marie Lightfoot mystery series.
Marilyn Holt, author of The Orphan Trains: Placing Out in America will speak at 2:00 on Saturday, April 18. She discusses the “orphan trains” which brought poor children from the eastern cities to rural Kansas from 1867 until the 1920s. She relates firsthand accounts of orphan train riders which challenge our picture of childhood in the “good old days.”
